Leading Critical Discussions on Sustainability in the International Business Classroom
Webinar Jointly Organized by AIB Teaching & Education Shared Interest Group and Georgia State University CIBER
Featuring:
Dr. Maria Ilieva, Osaka City University, Japan
Dr. Miguel Cordova, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, Peru
Moderator:
Dr. Daria Panina, Texas A&M University, United States
Join us for a webinar to explore perspectives from different parts of the World on how sustainability dimensions could be debated in IB classes. In this webinar, we focus on stimulating students’ thinking about interconnectedness of economic, social, and environmental aspects in managerial decision-making and preparing students to apply broader considerations in their future career to address global challenges.
Dr. Ilieva will discuss business practices for finding a balance among the three pillars of sustainability – economic, environmental, and social. How to present the interconnection among the different sustainable goals to international business and management students? Dr. Ilieva will provide examples of cases and videos about gender equality and protection of the environment; recycling in developed countries and improvement of health in less developed countries; green economy, sustainable lifestyles, and environmental societies.
Dr. Cordova will use the fishmeal and fish oil industries as examples of relevant industries for aquaculture development and how this supposedly sustainable activity could be endangering the future of the ocean, due to unsustainable practices at various stages of its supply chains. More sustainable alternatives will be also discussed, in order to unravel this dichotomy and provide valuable insights of how to identify these dual situations within international business.
Key takeaways:
- Obtaining examples of how social (for instance, gender equality) and environmental issues interact influencing international business and its management. Through these examples, learning to discuss with students pro-sustainability business practices.
- Through the examples of fishmeal and fish oil global supply chains, learning to lead the discussion about ironic situations that emerge from stakeholders’ sustainability concerns and situations in which stakeholders believe in the benefits of their actions that actually cause environmental harm.
