Allan Bird is a fellow of Academy of International Business and a Reviewing Editor of Journal of International Business Studies. He is currently a Visiting Professor at the Goa Institute of Management (GIM) located in Goa, India. Prior to GIM, he was Associate Vice President for International Affairs at Pacific University. He held the Darla and Frederick Brodsky Trustee Professor in Global Business at Northeastern University from 2009 to 2019. For ten years prior he was the Ei’ichi Shibusawa-Seigo Arai Professor of Japanese Studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis where he was also Director of the International Business Institute and of the International MBA program. His visiting positions include Columbia University, Rikkyo University, Monterey Institute for International Studies, Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences, Osaka International University, Japan’s National Self Defense Academy and the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication.
Dr. Bird received his BA California State University, Fresno, his MA from Sophia University in Japan, and his PhD from the University of Oregon, where he was named Doctoral Student of the Year in 1986 and was a Fulbright Graduate Award recipient.
He has authored or co-authored/edited 9 books, more than 70 refereed journal articles, and 45 book chapters. His co-edited book, currently in its 3rd edition, Global Leadership: Research, Practice and Development won an Award of Merit for Research Scholarship and was a finalist for the University of San Diego’s Leadership Book of the Year Award. His articles have appeared in leading scholarly outlets, including the Journal of International Business Studies, Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, and the Journal of World Business. He is currently Reviewing Editor at the Journal of International Business Studies.
His professional service includes President of the Association of Japanese Business Studies, with additional lengthy service on AJBS’s Executive Committee, Chair of the Careers Division (AOM), and Executive Committee Member of the International Management Division (AOM). He has served multiple times as track chair at AIB annual meetings. He was a key architect and founding member of the International Organization Network (ION) and was also a founder and inaugural head of the Consortium for Undergraduate International Business Education (CUIBE).
Since 2001, Professor Bird also serves as President of The Kozai Group, Inc., an international consulting firm dedicated to enhancing professional managerial and intercultural performance. He has served on the Board of Governors at the Goa Institute of Management, the Graduate Advisory Board, College of Business, Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences (Finland) and as Honorary Dean, Park Global School of Business Excellence (India). It has been his pleasure to work with companies in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.
