Virtual Study Abroad: Exploring New Impactful International Experiences

The recent pandemic has led to major travel disruptions and to the cancellation of almost all study abroad programs in spring and summer 2020. However, opportunities for leveraging technologies to ensure internationally-focused experiential activities have also become apparent. Existing and new technologies are being used to digitize signature experiences on study abroad programs.
In this workshops the speakers will share their own experiences in implementing virtual study abroad in spring 2020 including live webinars, panels, live cases, and virtual exchange projects with peers.
The main takeaways are:
- Identify best practices in designing and implementing virtual study abroad.
- Leverage technologies to create unique international experiences for students.
- Identify the opportunities of virtual study abroad programs, and integrating these into business program curriculum.
About the Speakers
Dr. Mourad Dakhli
Professor of International Business

Mourad Dakhli is professor of International Business at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia and holds a PhD from the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. He is also a Visiting Lecturer at Shanghai Business School, and frequently leads pedagogy-focused faculty development programs around the world. His research publications center on the value-generating processes of human and social capital across different cultural and institutional settings with implications on learning and innovation. He is active in the scholarship of teaching and learning, and has published and presented on various topics including experiential learning in international business, signature experiences on study abroad programs, and modes of delivery effects on learning among others. Professor Dakhli holds a Master Teacher and Mastering Online Teaching certifications, and frequently serves as a teaching mentor to junior faculty.
Dr. Erica Piros Kovacs

Erica Kovacs is a Clinical Professor of International Business in the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business. She has been teaching since 1994 and finished her PhD in 2009 at UFPE, in Recife, Brazil. Her research was about the internationalization process of agribusiness firms and now she focus on teaching and its innovations. She has worked in multinational firms such as Philips and Rayovac and has more than 10.000 hours of consultancy regarding international business and strategic planning. She has also created international business courses and methodologies for SEBRAE, the government agency in Brazil that supports small businesses and traveled to more than 30 countries, mostly due to work. She also worked as a visiting scholar at the Institute of International Business at Georgia State University, in Atlanta in 2015.
